YOUTH ROWING

Rowing is a pure team sport. In a boat, working together is the difference between having a good row and having a great one. At PVRC, the bonds that form in a boat continue on land. Join in grade 7 to 12 to try rowing. It may stay with you for life.

PROGRAMS

High School Rowing Club

9/12/22 - 11/4/22

One season of rowing, or one SAFARI session

Prerequisites:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 6pm-7:30pm

Athletes in grades 9 through 12 with at least one season of previous rowing experience may join our high school rowing club. This program is designed for a diverse range of participants: rowers and coxswains who want to row while also pursuing other sports/activities, who enjoy rowing but may not want to train for or participate in competitions, or who would like to learn more about the sport and develop their abilities before pursuing competitive training are all excellent candidates for this team. Athletes who are interested will have the opportunity to compete in scrimmages with other local teams, but it is not mandatory.

Middle School Rowing Club

9/6/22 - 10/29/22

7th or 8th grade, no experience necessary

Tuesday - Thursday 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

This program is for youth in grades 7 and 8 who are either a beginner with no experience, or for those who have rowed before and want to continue on a casual level. The focus of this program will be on learning and strengthening the understanding of fundamental rowing concepts, developing basic bodyweight strength and a healthy cardiovascular system, and of course, having fun!

High School Introduction to Rowing

9/12/22 - 11/4/22

9th grade, no experience required.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 6pm-7:30pm

Students entering grade 9 or above, come to PVRC for a new experience and some time on the river! This program is for high school aged students with little to no prior rowing experience. Functional movement, general conditioning, technique, rowing terminology, safety, equipment handling, and having fun are the main components of this program. Participants who complete the Intro to Rowing program may then continue their rowing experience with our High School Rowing Club, or may try their hand at the competitive side of the sport with our High School Competitive racing team for subsequent seasons.

One rowing coach guides you (and a friend) through the steps of learning and improving your ability to row in a boat for one person, called "sculling." This program provides three 90-minute lessons at a time that you and the coach agree on. Use of club boats, oars, and on-water supervision by a coach in a safety launch are included.

Middle School Competitive Rowing

8/29/22 - 11/4/22

7th or 8th grade, one season of rowing experience, or one SAFARI summer session

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3:30p-5:30p

This program is for athletes in grades 7 and 8 with at least one prior season of rowing experience who are interested in getting more involved with the sport. The goal of this program continue to build on the technical and conceptual foundations they have laid, while starting to learn the basics of training and competing in the sport. Athletes will gradually work on developing their physical fitness both in general and for rowing in particular, as well as hone their skills by learning and practicing more advanced technical concepts. Athletes will have the opportunity to put their new knowledge and skills to the test by competing at local and regional races throughout the fall. Fees for participation in any fall racing (including but not limited to competition fees, travel expenses, and racing uniforms) are not included in the price of the program.

High School Competitive Rowing

8/29/22 - 11/4/22

Two seasons of coached rowing or Coach's approval.

Monday - Friday 3:30 PM - 5:30PM plus weekend regattas

High school athletes with at least one season of previous rowing experience and the desire to train hard and compete at local and regional races are eligible to join this team. Focus for the season will be on developing technical proficiency, increasing aerobic and muscular endurance, habit formation, and team building. Athletes will be expected to attend most practices, and their participation will be assumed for all competitions. Regatta fees, travel expenses, and racing uniforms are not included in the program price and will be assessed separately.
