Welcome to Fall 2019 Rowing!

Fall, 2019

Dear Parent,

Welcome to PVRC Rowing! We are excited for a new season at PVRC and happy that you and your rower are a part of it.

All fall programs will be underway as of Tuesday, September 3, and we are looking forward to greeting your rower at the PVRC boathouse at 121 West Street, Springfield MA. Practice starts at 3:30pm for Varsity and 4pm for Novice and Development teams. All practices end at 5:30pm. Prompt pick up at the end of practice is expected.

If you are driving, please be sure to view the Pickup, Drop-off, and Parking Map in the Parent Code of Conduct. Traffic at the boathouse can be heavy during drop off and pick up times and safety is our primary concern

There is a lot of necessary information on PVRC’s website for rowers and their families to read. We rely on everyone having read this information to ensure a safe and positive experience at PVRC for all. Topics include important dates, FAQs, Parent Code of Conduct, Rower Code of Conduct, Uniforms, Calendar, Coaches’ Corner, and much more. Please invest the time to learn more about what to expect this season at http://www.pvriverfront.org/pvrc-youth-rowing-home-page

PVRC is at a momentous point in its history. We have returning coaches for all of our teams, sixteen Varsity athletes, two guaranteed entries in Head of the Charles, and more! It is an exciting time for sure at PVRC.

Rowing is a sport unlike any other. It requires a huge commitment from the athlete as well as the athlete’s family and supporters. Competitions - called “regattas” - are long days. Boats and oars cost more than soccer balls or tennis racquets, and require more maintenance. We need you to help PVRC continue to be successful and grow. All rowers and their parents/guardians/mentors are expected to contribute service in some capacity. Whether it’s wisdom, wealth, or work you can give, PVRC has a problem you can help solve, product you can buy, or project you can lend a hand with!

Please check the Calendar tab on our website for important dates. For regattas specific to your child’s squad, check the descriptions of each team on the Youth Rowing Page. Here are a few dates to make special note of:

  • Wednesday, August 28 - Mandatory Parent Meeting - 5:30pm-6:00pm. Meet the coaches and PVRC leadership, get your questions answered, and meet other parents. Experienced parents, your attendance is vital to get to know the new PVRC families and learn about what is new at PVRC.

  • Saturday, September 14 - Rockrimmon Regatta - 7am-2pm. This is PVRC’s only rowing race that we host (called a regatta). Rockrimmon is a really fun day at PVRC and volunteers are needed to help everything run smoothly. Help is needed in the parking lot, at the grill, and more! Contact Regatta Coordinator Julie Quick (leferj@gmail.com) if you are available on September 14.

  • October 19 and 20 - Head of the Charles - Boston, MA. PVRC youth and adult rowers will be competing at this event in Boston, the largest 2-day regatta in the world. If you can get to Boston, this is an incredible experience.

  • November 2 - Row-a-thon: PVRC’s fall fundraiser. All participants will be asking their communities for help supporting the wonderful programming at PVRC. On the day of Row-A-Thon, if the weather cooperates, the entire boathouse of rowers will take to the water for a long row to celebrate the fundraising.

  • Wednesday, November 27 - Alumni Event. This Wednesday before Thanksgiving we welcome our college rowers back to the boathouse. Join in to hear their stories, celebrate their victories, and hang banners from their new rowing teams on our old walls.

If this seems like a lot of information, you’re right! Your short to-do list must include: 1. Read the Codes of Conduct. 2. Install GroupMe on your smartphone or set up a GroupMe account online. 3. Accept the invitation you receive to join the GroupMe chat for your rower’s team. 4. Check our Calendar, save the important dates, and alert coaches to any potential conflicts with regattas.

If you have any questions about being a Rowing Parent, how our team runs, or how you can help with the team, please ask in your GroupMe chat. If you have specific questions about your athlete or the training program please contact Coach Renee Jones at 860-944-6196 or coachreneejones@pvriverfront.org. If you have questions about donations, PVRC in general or PVRC events, please let me know.

Thank you for your support of PVRC,

Ben Quick
