SPRINGFIELD DRAGONS!

Meet the Dragon Rays

Dragon Rays team members share a passion for being on the water, and we make a point of supporting each other.

Here is some info to get you started:

  • First, you are welcome to join us for a practice session. Send email to dragonrays@prviverfront.org to set that up.

  • Ready to join? You must register as a PVRC member, so go to to http://www.pvriverfront.or/join

    • If you are a Breast Cancer Survivor, your PVRC membership fee will be waived. (You will see a place on the registration form to indicate your BCS status.) This is made possible by a grant from Rays of Hope.

  • Winter Training - Boat house is open M - Thu and Saturday mornings. Paddlers may participate in any Adult Winter Training session, up to three times a week. (Mid November through Mid March)

  • Water Practice (March through November) is every Tuesday/Thursday night 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. or as determined by the Coach. During water season, we ask members to arrive early on weeknights to “gear up” before we head to the boats.

  • To go out in a dragon boat,  you will need the following:  waterproof footwear that will not come off (no flip flops), comfortable exercise clothes, sunscreen, water bottle, and sunglasses

  • We provide personal flotation devices (PFDs) and will help you select the right size and fit.

  • We provide paddles, and will advise you on the proper size.

    • You may bring your own PFD and paddle if you have them.

  • Launching the boats requires hands-on from ALL paddlers.

  • Once you are seated in the boat, there should be no excessive talking. You need to listen to the Coach and Steersperson for instruction.

  • We will teach you the basics of the dragon boat stroke as well as safety commands.

Team communication is key.

We are using www.GroupMe.com as our primary form of communication. We use the GroupMe computer app to remind paddlers of practices, social events, and activities. If you cannot access GroupMe, don't worry. We'll send you an email.

It is very important that you respond one way or another on the weekly sign-up sheets. We need to know who will be at practice so we can assign seats appropriately.

We participate in several races during our Water Season.

The first event is usually in Boston in early June. The next will be at the Springfield Dragon Boat Festival on the 4th Saturday of the month. We also plan to go to the Asian Festival in Hartford in August and possibly to one or more races. (Please note that race fees and expenses are not included in your membership fee.)

We believe that every member should have a chance to paddle in our races. We may not always win, but we will try to include every member who wants to compete, keeping in mind that race rosters are usually limited to 20 paddlers and 2 - 4 alternates. If you do intend to race, you should plan on attending as many pre-race practices as possible.
